Advanced Math

Advanced Math

by: Tommy M.

When 5th graders enter the 6th grade, the first thing they do is take the placement test to see whether they will be in basic or advanced math. Sister Paulynne is the sixth grade math teacher and Ms. Ferrigno is the math teacher for the seventh and eighth grades.

The basic 7th-grade classes are learning 7th-grade core curriculum while the advanced 7th-grade classes learn some of the 7th-grade curriculum and then the 8th-grade core curriculum. The basic 8th graders learn 8th-grade core curriculum. The Algebra class (advanced 8th) is learning Algebra 1. An advanced 7th-grade student, Diego Jimenez said, “Advanced math sets us up for success in life because we are learning higher level math earlier.” The math teachers make math exciting and enjoyable by having us work in groups and providing fun, but challenging math assignments. In addition to some book exercises the teachers make math easy to understand by breaking it down and explaining the math equations thoroughly with their techniques. These techniques energize the students and prepares them for the upcoming years to come.
