The San Pedro High School boys basketball team captured the Marine League championship and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Los Angeles City playoffs thanks to the help of our very own Chargers. The team, who is coached by one of our own parishioners, John Bobich, defied the odds as they captured the Marine League title, which is noted to be one of the top leagues in Southern California.
Benny Weischedel, who also led the Pirate football team to a City title, was a three-year varsity standout in both football and basketball. Brandon Hrboka, who now stands at 6’6″, was a force for the Pirates, as he was selected to the All Marine League First team. He is also the grandson of our legendary athletic director, Chuck Trainotti.
For all you Charger fans who remember the Rogosic twins (Anthony and Tyler), the duo who amazed the CYO a few years back, have developed into outstanding high school student-athletes, as they both played key roles in the Pirates’ success. The twins were selected as the scholar-athletes of the year, as they both earned a 4.0 grade point average. “The students that come from Holy Trinity have always been respectful, hardworking, and great role models to the younger students,” said Coach Bobich. “Holy Trinity and their families have instilled an excellent work ethic and great values into these young men. It’s been a true pleasure to coach these gentlemen.”
